You know, there are some interesting things that happen here that I don’t see at other places where I’ve worked. It’s Christmas time; Christmas is just around the corner. We have our company Christmas party, and that’s always a big one. The company actually buys a Christmas present for every kid in every family that comes to the Christmas party. To think that your boss, your employer, and your company are going to set aside money for all your kids so that they can have just something a little extraโ€”something not necessary, but it’s something a little extra for Christmasโ€”that’s unique.

The sense of family here goes beyond just the workplace. We bring in our families, and at the same time, we have a genuine feel of family within the company. I work in HR, and I’m the one who usually receives all those calls. If the phone’s ringing, it’s because somebody’s in need, and somebody’s got something going on. It could be pretty minor or trivial to take care of, but at the same time, it could be something more substantial.

Dealing with medical issues, workman’s comp, injuries, accidentsโ€”being there to say that I’ve got your back, and I’m here for you to help you get through this, no matter what it is, is a rewarding part of my job. It’s not just me; everyone in the company has that exact same feel. Many times, foremen, journeymen, or others come to me saying, “Hey, this is going on with a guy. Can I donate some of my vacation time to him? I see he’s going through this. Can I help him out?” It’s a natural part of our culture, our community, and our family here. Seeing these things happen regularly, even last week, and being a part of those things sets this place apart, making it a bit more special and unique than other places.
