It’s everybody’s job at Barts Electric to make sure everybody succeeds. But as of right now, my job is just to help them, give them a push to learn, and to succeed in future endeavors. The Red Hat program at Barts Electric introduces electrical construction to new employees. It gives trainees the opportunity to quickly assess if this is a viable career for them, providing a basic understanding of what electrical construction involves and easing them into a fulfilling career. Employees also learn the principles of staying safe on a job site by recognizing hazards that can arise on construction projects.

The Red Hat program is an entry-level program, and training is continual throughout the employee’s career. This training at Barts Electric begins with Red Hats, progresses through apprenticeship, and sets the stage for a career of learning. Even after achieving journeyman or master electrician status, we thought it’d be a good opportunity to get the Red Hat started on the wall, roof piping, just basic piping, and stuff like that. Kind of understand the drawing like a real-world scenario, you know, show them where our underground drawings indicate home runs, pick them up, label the boxes. We have a trainer working with them hands-on. Paul is overseeing all the Red Hats.

Overseeing the three Red Hats we have over there. So, when they’re looking at the drawings, are they looking at paper versions, or are they looking at the iPad? We’re looking at the paper, and we got, alright, Paul’s got an iPad, showing them some of that stuff too. Some of the drawings, like our red lines and underground drawings, are on there. It’s working out good so far. I think it’s a great opportunity to learn.

What kind of real-world attitudes are you seeing from the Red Hats? Are they excited? At first, I think they’re kind of overwhelmed. The first day, but other than that, I think they’re starting to feel better. They’re getting comfortable now, catching on to stuff. But I feel like the first day, you could tell, you see it in their faces, they were kind of overwhelmed. A lot of people running around here, studs were going up fast, duckworth was going up. Well, Haley told me down at the end of the hallway that she was excited. There was something different every day. You’ve got her on a different task every day. I assume you’re communicating her time and task with her, letting her know what’s expected over here, kind of coordinate more with Paul. But then, Paul kind of goes down with, “Okay, so yeah, it’s been something different every day. It seems like.”
